About Chris
A trip to Africa in 1994 kindled the passion that informs these extraordinary drawings, now sought after by collectors in numerous countries.
Each image in developed from personal observations, video footage and sketches made in the wild by the Chris - and stills taken by Margie, his wife.
After further research and drafting, it then takes an average of 180 hours before these drawings obtain their shattering clarity: an anatomical precision that loses none of the lithe, sinuous, muscular savagery, the powerful resilience.... even the playfulness of their living subjects. these are complex images in which stark reality has subtlety, in which nuance descends to a last, minute, leaf, that shun romance but admit touches of tenderness, even humour.
Before embarking on drawing as his full time career in 2003, Chris spent 43 years farming in Australia's Outback, the last 21 on the 185,000 acre "Tupra Station" spread along the Lachlan river north of Hay. Here, in flat, open, semi-arid country where a single paddock might be as large as 20,000 acres, there is both need and opportunity to develop acute observation as a crucial skill.
With no formal training, it was through these decades that he patiently refined his natural talent - until hand could match observational skills: and both could satisfy the rigour of his own critical expectation.
Since 1997 Chris has been commissioned to produce drawings that combine views of safari lodges with local wildlife and landscape in Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa.. In recent years, he has begun adding Australian images to those of Africa especially after travelling through the Red Centre up the Tanami Track
Chris has won numerous awards since 1996 when he won the Catani Drawing Award at the Wildlife Art Society of Australasia Exhibition in Melbourne - his first entry in a major competition.
Chris and Margie had many trips to a number of African countries over the last ten years.
Chris’s love and understanding for Australia and Africa wildlife is reflected in his detailed drawings. He has been refining his skill with graphite and coloured pencils with each drawing he executes and the detail he achieves is extraordinary.
